Significant volumes of waste water are generated daily with the two largest and most prevalent sources being domestic activities and industrial processes. The processes and chemical technology employed to treat waste water are dictated by the type of contaminants and the degree of removal required.
The general principle in wastewater treatment is to remove pollutants from the water by getting them either to settle or to float, and then removing this material. Some pollutants are easily removable. Others must be converted to a settleable form before they can be removed.
The actual treatment processes employed may vary from facility to facility but all use some or all of the steps listed below:
Primary Treatment
Seconday Treatment
Tertiary Tretment
Dewatering
Disinfection and effluent discharge
|
During each step, chemical treatment is administered to aid in the removal of the target contaminants. Typical protocol includes pH adjustment using acids or alkaline agents, addition of specialty precipitation aids, primary coagulants, and flocculants. Secondary treatment may include the use of aerobic or anaerobic bacteria processes to further treat the water. In some select cases, water requires additional solids removal referred to as tertiary treatment in order to meet discharge requirements.
Solids or sludge generated are further treated using dewatering aids to remove water bound up in the solids. The dewatering step reduces the volume of sludge and the cost of its hauling and disposal.
